Mary Slessor (1848-1915)
Portrait image of "Mary Slessor as a girl".; Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary known for her work in Africa and for promoting women's rights. Mary was born in Aberdeen in 1948 the second of a family of seven and she lived here until 1859, when the family moved to Dundee. Here Mary, aged 11, entered Baxter's textile works working for half the day and attending school the other half.
